information
Although we know a baby will only come when they are ready. The last few weeks can become uncomfortable, and most women will try one or two methods to encourage labour. Sometimes induction of labour is offered because of a concern for you or your baby. Currently, the choices are to decline induction of labour or experience a medical induction which can be long, painful, and not always successful. This can have an impact on your labour and birth experience. Visit our insights page to read more about induction of labour.
Natural
remedies
If you are facing a difficult decision and considering induction of labour, there are strategies to encourage labour to start. With a good technique, the stimulation by hand expressing colostrum begins to release an important hormone for labour called Oxytocin. Furthermore, strengthening your mindset to embrace labour, and reducing fear of birth enables the brain to receive important messages.
Research has revealed that complementary therapies can be very effective in encouraging the labour process. For example, some essential oils are known to encourage the uterus to become active, and an acupressure point evidenced in clinical trials to soften the cervix. However, it’s important to remember certain essential oils are unsafe for use during pregnancy, and some oils should be avoided before 37 weeks gestation. To ensure safety and effectiveness, good quality essential oils should only be administered by a midwife qualified in complementary therapies.
How
we can
help
At Beyond Midwives we can select the most useful course of therapies depending on your pregnancy journey to help encourage labour. We will supply a bespoke blend of essential oils known to stimulate labour, with instruction on how to use safely.
This package also includes equipment, advice, and support to begin harvesting colostrum, use positive affirmation cards effectively, and teach acupressure points to continue at home. We will make suggestions and demonstrate techniques for getting baby into an optimal position. If labour does not start, the therapies have been found to shorten the length of labour. If you feel unsure about encouraging labour but want to discuss your options, you can choose to have a one-to-one consultation with a midwife.
